The Ballad of the White Horse edition by G K Gilbert Keith Chesterton Reference eBooks
I wasn't quite prepared for this book. I had only ever read Chesterton's detective work and apologetics writings. This book stunned me. The poetic rhythm sounds beautiful, like horses galloping off to war. The story comes through clearly, even if you don't know anything about the history of Alfred and the Battle of Ethandun. My favorite line comes when King Alfred, distracted, burns some cakes and gets slapped by a old woman for his inattention. Instead of retaliating against her, he says this:
"This blow that I return not
Ten times will I return
On kings and earls of all degree,
And armies wide as empires be
Shall slide like landslips to the sea
If the red star burn.
"One man shall drive a hundred,
As the dead kings drave;
Before me rocking hosts be riven,
And battering cohorts backwards driven,
For I am the first king known of Heaven
That has been struck like a slave.

The Ballad of the White Horse edition by G K Gilbert Keith Chesterton Reference eBooks Reviews
I couldn't follow the theme or symbolism.
good book
I loved this epic poem about war and stupidity. I recommend it.
From Wiki - The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, published in 1911. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in the English language. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's military and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story.

I'm not into poetry so much, and didn't know what this was till I looked it up on Wiki. Interesting, still not my thing. -)
I am so happy I read this book! Lovely, epic, and wise passages are copiously highlighted in mine. You can see roots of Lord of the Rings and the Narnia books here. I enjoyed it immensely. Chesterton really takes me places, you know? It's like I'm not just reading it, I'm walking around in it. Enjoy!
Take a look at a picture of the ancient chalk "horse" on the Downs (not in this version, but available on the internet) and you will see the idea behind this poem. It is really a good one. Catholics will really enjoy it, as it gives a look at the ancient Faith. It also ties in with G.K. Chesterton's ideas on distributism, and the return of paganism in our time.
Chesterton's place in history would be secured by this one epic work had he never penned another word. You can almost hear the galloping horses and the clash of swords in this poem and see the heroes fighting on the battlefield. For many, Fr. Brown mysteries are the only familiarity with Chesterton. That's a shame! This should be at the top of the reading list!
